Oki & Welcome
The Piikani First Nation, a member of the confederacy of Blackfoot Nations, is located in present-day Southern Alberta, Canada. The Piikani Nation and its people are the custodians, guardians and keepers of the land presently known as North America and have been the stewards of the land since time immemorial. We refer to our land today as our Ancestral Territory, or simply our Territory. According to our stories, ceremonies and songs, the Piikani territory stretched as far north as the North Saskatchewan River, extending south to the Yellow Stone area; our presence was known far into the Rocky Mountains and as far east as the Great Lakes.
Guided by the wisdom of the Piikani Nation, its people and generational, intricate and complex knowledge and knowledge systems that have sustained their way of life and being since time immemorial, the Piikani Charter for Intergovernmental Affairs affirms the complex and mandatory relationship the Piikani will continue to declare, govern and enjoy over their territory for eternity.
The Charter's primary goal is to set the standard of prerequisites the nation requires before establishing environmental, cultural or economic relationships with the nation on activity with our Territory. The Charter will ensure we are responsible to our Ancestors, Our Nation and Our Rights.
In all respects, our knowledges are contained in systems that are specific to Piikani, our culture and heritage and practiced in ceremony applying Piikani Sacred and Natural Law. Therefore, it is our duty as stewards to uphold the integrity of Piikani knowledge systems where to adhere to this Charter is to respect, protect our knowledge systems to ensure they are thriving.
On September 5 in Piikani Nation Council Chamber on the Piikani Nation, the Piikani Charter was approved by Band Council Resolution (BCR) no. 2025-0905-03.
