Sustainability - Upholding the Integrity of our Knowledge Systems

SIGNIFICANCE


Since time immemorial the Piikani People’s comprehensive societal and governance systems have enabled prosperity and health within the people, land, and relationships.


ESSENTIAL


Piikanissini comprises a majority of Piikani ancestral heritage.

The Piikani ancestral way of life is upheld and honored through annual renewals and celebrations of identity, wisdom, practices and customs.

The Piikani have the responsibility to ensure their way of life is available for future generations to live, enjoy, and transfer on.

In honoring Piikani inherent rights, all cultural traditions, customs, and practices of Piikanissini must remain available to all generations. The activities that must remain with the Piikani forever include, but are not limited to:

  • Harvesting of Lodge Pole Pine, medicines, foods and game
  • Cultural Renewal Ceremonies at historical land sites that comprise the Stories that define the Piikani and their existence
  • Kinship ceremonial transfers of knowledge and family guidance
  • Ceremonial and Spiritual Practices
  • Social and economic trade to ensure that the Piikani prosper no matter age, ability, health, or gender

Enable and respect the right to practice our Piikanissini Way of Life.

Fulfill the duty to consult where development, management, strategizing, territorial governance, and natural resources are concerned.


PROTOCOL


Acknowledge and respect the Piikani rights to practice and protect Piikani territory and natural resources. The Piikani Knowledge System embodies the governance protocols and practices, and the Piikani, along with all our relations and partners, must ensure its integrity for future generations.

All interpretation, definition and application of the Charter and its Articles are at the discretion and interpretation of the Piikani Nation and its people.
