Co-Management

SIGNIFICANCE


The Piikani are beholden to their land and have always comprehended the richness of the natural resources contained within it. Since time immemorial the Piikani have been stewards to their land and remain in admiration of its power and vastness.

In perpetuating Piikanissini, land stewardship must continue and be inherited by all future generations. This must be done through co-protection, co-management, and co-governance.


ESSENTIAL


The perpetuation of Piikani culture is ensured when the land is protected by the implementation of responsible processes and meaningful co-management.

Historical barriers obstructing Piikani input, participation, and assessment must be unseated if true co-management is to ensure the continuance of Piikanissini.

Piikani perspective is rooted in stewardship that has been performed for thousands of years, and an equitable level of deciding power and recognition in operations and policy must be upheld.

Partnerships, opportunities, benefits and all development initiatives must be accessible and prioritize our agencies.


PROPONENT


Incorporate the natural, customary and sacred laws of Piikani Knowledge System in all operations and policies.

Prioritize sustainable development with strategies and management practices that honour Piikani Knowledge System.

Respect and act upon assessment, instruction, and advice provided by Piikani leadership, leaders, and consultation procedures.

Ensure all regulatory and system bodies are aware of, and support, Piikani recommendations and specifications.


PROTOCOL


Piikani’s complete participation to opportunities, benefits and partnerships must be prioritized.

All development activities must implement co-protection, co-management, and co-governance strategy for responsible development as defined by Piikani. Co-protection, Co-management, and Co-governance will ensure the perpetuation of Piikanissini. All stakeholders are expected to provide meaningful support of this endeavor.

Piikanissini is synonymous, one in the same, in terms of our land, natural resources, ecosystem, and people.

All interpretation, definition and application of the Charter and its Articles are at the discretion and interpretation of the Piikani Nation and its people.
