Honouring Siksikai’powahsin (Blackfoot Language)

SIGNIFICANCE


The Piikani acknowledge Siksikai’powahsin, The Blackfoot Language as a living language having its own classification, not limited or restricted by English interpretation. The Blackfoot Language is an animate, vibrant, and beautiful language. Due to the challenge of colonization, the Blackfoot language has been at risk of extinction and abstraction.


ESSENTIAL


Piikani reliance upon the Blackfoot language is critical. Piikani protocols, laws, and customs are stored within it.

The Blackfoot language encompasses words, sounds, music, and symbols that define, guide, and ensure that the Piikani have the opportunity to live a good life.


PROPONENT


To Acknowledge & Respect that the Siksikai’powahsin language:

  • As a living language
  • Fluent speakers (acknowledged and credited)
  • Is endangered and at risk of being lost
  • Requires substantial revitalization initiatives such as scholarships, donations, sponsorships, advocacy support, partnerships, and community-based initiatives

PROTOCOL


Proponents must acknowledge that Siksikai’powahsin, Blackfoot Language, is a living language; acknowledge the negative impacts of colonization to the Blackfoot Language; and to acknowledge the role and the rights the Blackfoot language has in all types in mediation settings. To support revitalization initiatives for its revival.

All interpretation, definition and application of the Charter and its Articles are at the discretion and interpretation of the Piikani Nation and its people.
